The Effect of Prebiotic Fibres on Weight Loss in an Overweight and Obese Population

Obesity

The aim of this study is to investigate whether a diet supplemented with two prebiotic fibres induces greater changes in body weight compared to placebo during 12 weeks of energy restriction in an obese/overweight population. The hypothesis is that the fiber-containing dietary supplement will: 1) Induce greater changes in body weight compared to the placebo group 2) change the gut microbiota composition 3) improve glucose homeostasis 4) decrease serum concentration of triglycerides, total and LDL cholesterol The hypothesis is that the effect of the intervention on weight loss will be partly mediated by the diet-induced changes in the gut microbiota composition.

High-intensity Interval Training on Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Overweight Women

Healthy Volunteers

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is currently considered one of the most effective strategies to improved cardiorespiratory fitness, which is recognized as a protective factor for cardiovascular diseases and metabolic diseases such as overweight and obesity. However, current evidence is still limited and requires clarity (frequency, time per session and intensity) regarding to greater increases attributed to HIIT. The aim of this study is to compare the effect of a low-volume high-intensity interval training versus a moderate-intensity continuous exercise on maximal oxygen consumption in overweight women 18 to 44 years old.

Daily Weight Feedback for Wheelchair Users to Promote Weight Loss

Overweight and ObesityDepression

The goals of the proposed study are to test the usability, feasibility and preliminary efficacy of the E-Scale with wheelchair users. The E-scale was developed as a weight monitoring technology for wheelchair users. Up to fifteen overweight or obese wheelchair users will be enrolled in a 13 week study that includes standard behavioral treatment (SBT) for weight loss, which focuses on diet, physical activity, and behavioral strategies (e.g., goal setting, self-monitoring) to support lifestyle changes specifically for people with mobility impairments. The subjects will also be provided the E-scale to track their weight daily. The outcome measure include usefulness (subjective feedback from a survey about the program/E-scale), feasibility (accuracy and repeatable measurements from the E-scale) and efficacy (improvements in weight and other measures of health) of the weight loss program coupled with the E-scale at the end of 13 weeks. The primary hypothesis is that the E-scale coupled with the weight loss intervention will result in significant improvements in weight, abdominal girth, body fat percentage, and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D).The results may inform the refinement of this technology to increase its applicability for wheelchair users to independently monitor their weight in their own homes while attempting to lose weight.

Motivational Interviewing as an Intervention for PCOS

Polycystic Ovary SyndromeOverweight and Obesity1 more

The aim of the study is to examine if motivational interviewing can have a positive effect on weight loss over a 6 month period. By losing weight, the investigators assume the patients will have a positive effect on quality of life, and also that weight loss will help to regulate the factors that are present with polycystic ovary syndrom (PCOS); such as menstrual disorders and infertility. Participants will be randomly assigned to a treatment group and a control group. Both groups will be followed as normal with blood samples and other tests such as scans of the ovaries and measurement of height and weight at the beginning of the study and after six months. In addition, there will be a small hair sample taken from the neck at the first consultation and after 6 months. This is done to measure the stress hormone cortisol in the body over the duration of the experiment. The treatment group receive individual motivational interviews by a nurse every 14 days for a period of six months. After half a year, tests are repeated to see if there are significant differences between the groups.

Comparison of Two Calorie Restricted MediterrAsian Diet on Weight Loss in FTO rs9939609 Overweight...

ObesityDietary Modification

Background: Obesity treatment should be individualized since some calorie restricted diet doesn't work for some individuals. Objective: we assess the effect of two different calorie restriction with MediterrAsian diet on weight loss of FTO rs9939609 carriers with overweight. Methods: we recruit 80 healthy overweight participants aged 20-45 years that randomly allocated in two interventional group [group 1: Mediterrasian diet according to adjusted ideal body weight with 500 calories restriction (RD) and group 2: without 500 calories restriction (NRD)+ Moderate physical activity]. Anthropometric indices will be assesses for all participants weekly for two month. The criteria for weight loss is 250-500 grams weekly. Metabolic indices, physical activity and psychologic aspects will be assesses at baseline and the end of the intervention. Dietary adherence will be checked by 24hr recalls at day 0, 30 and 60. At the end of the study, we compare carriers with different alleles (AA+TA and TT) in two intervention groups to find out which calorie restriction is appropriate for each genotype. Significant p-value is less than 0.05.
