RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug and giving them in different ways may kill more cancer cells. It is not yet known which regimen of combination chemotherapy is more effective for acute lymphoblastic leukemia PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare different regimens of combination chemotherapy in treating children who have newly diagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Some cancers become resistant to chemotherapy drugs. Combining PSC-833 with chemotherapy may reduce resistance to the drug and allow more cancer cells to be killed.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Some cancers become resistant to chemotherapy drugs. Combining mitomycin with a chemotherapy drug may reduce resistance to the drug and allow the cancer cells to be killed. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of mitomycin and mitoxantrone in treating patients with acute myelogenous leukemia and to determine whether mitomycin can reduce the cancer's resistance to chemotherapy.

PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of chemotherapy with or without bone marrow transplantation in treating children who have acute myeloid leukemia.
