Family members or unrelated donors with a similar type of bone marrow usually donate their bone marrow to the transplant patients. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of a new type of bone marrow transplant-one that uses lower doses of chemotherapy and bone marrow donated from family members with only partially matched bone marrow-in people with leukemia or lymphoma.

Autologous Transplantation for Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia
Chronic Myelogenous LeukemiaThe goal of this clinical research is to learn if treatment with high-dose busulfan and cyclophosphamide plus autologous bone marrow transplantation followed by treatment with Gleevec (imatinib mesylate) is effective in treating chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Objectives: To assess the efficacy of high dose busulfan-cyclophosphamide and autologous hematopoietic transplantation with post transplant Imatinib mesylate for the treatment of CML. The primary endpoint of the study is to determine the proportion of patients with CML alive in cytogenetic remission at one year following this treatment. Secondary endpoints are time to progression and survival.

In this study, the investigators will analyze the clinical outcomes for entire patient population as well as those for transplants, respectively. In addition, the results of this study will be compared to those of the investigators current study (imatinib plus conventional chemotherapy). The safety of this treatment will also be studied.

LeukemiaRATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as laromustine, daunorubicin, and cytarabine, work in different ways to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) may kill more cancer cells. PURPOSE: This phase I/II trial is studying the side effects and best dose of laromustine when given together with daunorubicin and cytarabine in treating patients with acute myeloid leukemia.

While all of these drugs are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of other cancers, these combinations are experimental for the treatment of CLL.
