Blended Care Versus Face-to-Face Therapy for Depression

Major Depressive Disorder

Depression is a severe mental disorder that affects 5-7% of Belgians each year. Unfortunately, many individuals with depression do not seek professional help, and if they do seek professional help, waiting lists for psychotherapy are typically very long. To help resolve this problem, this study aims to investigate whether blended therapies, i.e. therapies that consist of a mixture of face-to-face sessions and online sessions, are (cost-)effective as a treatment for depression, and whether they are as (cost-)effective as traditional treatments which consist of face-to-face sessions alone. Should this be the case, then blended therapy can be implemented on a large scale in mental health care, as it could provide a more cost-effective means of helping individuals with depression. This study also aims to investigate whether certain patient features, such as the severity of depression and personality traits, may influence the efficacy of (blended) psychotherapy for depression. Finally, we will also investigate patients' attitudes towards and experience of blended therapy.

Self-acupressure for Cancer-related Symptom Cluster of Insomnia, Depression, and Anxiety: a Feasibility...

InsomniaAnxiety1 more

Aim: To assess the acceptability and make estimations about the effectiveness of using self-acupressure to manage insomnia, depression, and anxiety in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Study design: three-arms randomized sham-controlled trial. Participants will be assigned to the true self-acupressure group, sham acupressure group, or enhanced standard care group, with a ratio of 1:1:1 using block randomize. Participants: patients receiving chemotherapy. 114 patients will be recruited to the study. Inclusion criteria: Undergoing chemotherapy currently, Age 20 - 84 years' old, able to read and write Vietnamese, Karnofsky score ≥ 80, Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) score ≥ 11, Anxiety score measured by The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) ≥ 8 and Depression score measured by HADS ≥ 8 Exclusion criteria: Patients are excluded from the trial if they are unable to understand or cooperate with study procedures, receiving other cancer treatments (e.g., radiotherapy, hormonal therapy) at the same time as receiving chemotherapy and during the period of their involvement in the trial, participating in other research studies which may have interacted with the current trial or affect insomnia, depression, anxiety perception, having difficulties or are unable to practice self-acupressure by themselves, are receiving insomnia or depression/anxiety treatment currently. Interventions Self-administered acupressure training section Participants in the true or sham self-acupressure groups will receive a self-administered acupressure training section based on their group assignment. Then, they will be requested to practice acupressure at home for 4 weeks. Patient leaflet All of the participants in three groups will receive a patient leaflet with tips to manage insomnia, depression, and anxiety. Weekly telephone reminder will be made to follow-up participants in all groups. Outcome measurement The recruitment rate, consent rate, refusal rate, attrition rate, adherence rate will be calculated. The acceptability of the intervention will be measured by the Intervention Rating Profile - 15. The ISI, The HADS, and The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General will be used to evaluate the effects of self-acupressure on the severity of insomnia, depression, anxiety. Others sleep parameters and adverse events associated with self-acupressure will be recorded.

iPad Application-based Intervention for Post-stroke Depression

Post-stroke Depression

We plan to conduct a randomized controlled trial to examine whether usual rehabilitation plus an iPad application-based intervention improves post-stroke depression symptoms compared to usual rehabilitation alone. The purpose of this pilot randomized controlled trial is to investigate the feasibility of the final randomized controlled trial.

The Effect of Probiotic Supplementation on the Mental Status, Inflammation, and Intestinal Barrier...

Depressive DisorderMajor1 more

More and more evidence confirms the relationship between the gut-brain-microbiota axis and the symptoms of mood disorders. A potential pathway connecting the intestines and the brain in depression is inflammation. Interventions for reducing inflammation and restoring the integrity of the intestinal mucosa are promising approaches in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Gut dysbiosis and the diet containing gluten are potential factors may be factors that negatively affect the communication between intestinal and brain. Gluten has a high immunogenic potential and affinity for the intestinal mucosa layer. In patients with an abnormal reaction to gluten, the elimination diet led to improved mood symptoms. However, the relationship between gluten and depression is still poorly understood. Intestinal microbiota can affect the digestion of gluten and reduce its immunogenic potential. Studies have shown that probiotic supplementation has an anti-inflammatory effect, can lead to changes in intestinal permeability and alleviate the symptoms of depression. This evidence supports the need for co-therapy, including the elimination of gluten and the restoration of intestinal eubiosis to reduce inflammation and modulate the gut-brain-microbiota axis. The objective of the SANGUT study is to determine the impact of interventions concerning the gut-brain-microbiota axis (probiotic supplementation, gluten-free diet and their combination) on the mental state, markers of inflammation and markers of intestinal permeability in adult patients with MDD. The study will last 12 weeks and consist of four visits (V): V0 - Screening (Day 0), V1 - Baseline (up to 1 week after Screening), V2 (six weeks after Baseline), V3 - End of the study (12 weeks after Baseline). The main hypothesis is that probiotic supplementation and/or a gluten-free diet will reduce the symptoms of depression, lower the level of inflammatory markers and favourably affect the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier.

Internet-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Cardiac Patients

DepressionCardiovascular Diseases

Our overall objective is to evaluate the efficacy of therapist-assisted, internet-based cognitive-behavioural therapy (iCBT) for depressed cardiac patients with respect to clinical outcomes, and the feasibility of the program. Our primary outcome will be depression severity; secondary outcomes will be hospitalization for a cardiac cause, recurrent myocardial infarction or revascularization. The study will inform a proposal to incorporate iCBT into the resources routinely available to cardiac patients following hospitalization for a cardiac event.

Remote Training in Evidence-based Practices for Clinicians Who Work With Migrant Workers

Depression

This study will compare training as usual to automated training using an intelligent tutoring system in training bachelors (BA) level social workers in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The purpose of the study is to determine if time and cost of training front line clinicians in evidence-based treatments can be shortened, and if this new training model can reduce the need for clinicians to seek advice from experts.
