Attention Bias Modification Training for Young People

AnxietyDepression

Attention bias modification training (ABMT) is a computer-based attention training programme designed to modify the way a person's attention is directed to mild threats in the environment. What a person focuses their attention on plays an important role in how safe or unsafe they feel in certain situations. Much research has shown that people with high levels of anxiety tend to focus their attention on negative information in their surroundings. The purpose of ABMT is to set in place attention patterns that do not lead to excessive anxiety. The present study will test whether this treatment is effective in reducing social anxiety in 15-18 year olds in school settings. The study design consists of two phases. During Phase 1 participants will complete a screening questionnaire in relation to their wellbeing and emotions. This questionnaire will include a measure of the affective, cognitive, and behavioural components of social anxiety in adolescence. Depending on their suitability (i.e. scoring above a cut-off on a standardised measure of social anxiety in Phase 1 of the study), participants may then be invited to take part in a 4-week computer-based attention training programme. The purpose of this phase is to see if ABMT will help young people feel less worried or nervous in social situations by teaching them to focus on their environment differently. Previous research containing attention training tasks similar to this training programme suggests that attention training can reduce symptoms of social anxiety in adolescents. Individuals who are invited to take part in the training session will be randomly assigned to either the intervention (ABMT) or placebo (inactive) group. Both groups will be asked to complete a 4-week programme involving one computer training session per week (each session takes approximately 15-20 minutes). Questionnaires will also be given to participants to complete before and after the intervention, along with a 12-week follow up assessment. These will include questionnaires to measure social anxiety, depressive symptoms, and fears in relation to negative evaluation. Each questionnaire will take approximately 40 minutes to complete. Participants will not know whether they have received the intervention or placebo training until after the intervention.

A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Behavioural Activation Group Therapy in Individuals With...

Depression

Depression affects 15% of Canadians resulting in serious impact on health, ability to function including social, family and work related activities. Despite the several treatment options available for managing depression including medications, many patients do not respond to treatment and experience troublesome side effects. Psychotherapies are important in the treatment of depression and several options are currently being offered at the Mood Disorders Program (MDP), St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. However a simple and reportedly effective therapy called Behavioural Activation (BA) is not currently available and existing evidence supporting its' effectiveness is limited to individual therapy of community based patients who are unlike the patients seen at the MDP who may have a more severe illness. The investigators are therefore planning to study the effectiveness of BA in patients with depression as an add on therapy to existing usual care compared to wait-list added to usual care. The study outcome is reduction in depressive symptoms and improvement in quality of life. The duration of therapy is 18 weeks and all adults with depression are eligible to participate.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Maternal Depression

Maternal Depression

Depression related to pregnancy frequently presents postpartum depression, which has deteriorating and lasting negative effects, not only on infant and child well being but also on mother's and father's mental health (Nancy K et al 2009). It is therefore important to introduce interventions aiming to improve mental health of mothers that could minimize the risk of diseases, and have positive effect child's on physical and psychological developmental wellbeing. Therefore, this project has been designed to assess the effectiveness of Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Postnatal Depression in Pakistan.

CBT Versus Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor For Treatment Of Depression In Temporal Lobe Epilepsy...

DepressionEpilepsy1 more

The aim of the study is to compare the effect of group-cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)versus treatment as usual with the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor sertraline, in patients with diagnosis of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and depressive disorder.

A New Treatment Approach for Major Depressive Disorder Based Upon Targeting Monoamine Oxidase A...

Major Depressive Disorder

The investigators will be looking at MAO-A density before and after seven weeks of treatment with an antidepressant and dietary supplement. MAO-A is an enzyme that breaks down brain chemicals that regulate mood. MAO-A density is elevated in patients with major depressive episodes (MDE) secondary to major depressive disorder (MDD). Many remain treatment resistant with common antidepressant treatments and we think it may be due to poor targeting of brain pathologies. We want to test if adding a dietary supplement may normalize MAO-A.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy Effect on Depression and C-Reactive Protein Levels After 8 Weeks...

Major Depressive Disorder

This study will investigate the efficacy of an 8-week course in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) by ;measuring change from baseline to completion of treatment at 8 weeks in terms of depression severity using the Hamilton Depression Ratings Scale. We will measure change in C-Reactive Protein, a measure of inflammation, over the same time period.

Behavioral Study of Effects of Low-Level Light Therapy on Mood and Reaction Time

Depression

The goal of this project is to use low-level light therapy (LLLT) to enhance neural metabolism in the prefrontal cortex of humans, and measure the effects of LLLT on attentional bias change following a single session of attention bias modification (ABM). LLLT is non-invasive, therapeutically beneficial, and promotes a wide range of biological effects including enhancement of energy production, gene expression and prevention of cell death. Previous research has indicated that human participants show a beneficial psychological effect, including improved mood and greater sustained attention, following a single treatment of LLLT to the forehead. ABM is a computer-based cognitive task designed to decrease the mood-congruent negative attentional bias frequently observed in depressed and dysphoric individuals. Previous ABM studies have led to decrease in clinical symptoms relative to a control condition. This study will explore whether the effects of LLLT on mood and attention could improve the potency of ABM, leading to greater attention change and greater improvement of mood relative to sham LLLT.

Mindfulness for Breast Cancer

AnxietyDepression1 more

The primary purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) vs. Treatment as Usual (TAU) for depression and anxiety symptoms in breast cancer patients in recovery. Investigators will examine whether MBCT-related improvements in sleep quality, illness-related distress, and rumination (escalating cycles of negative thinking) predict MBCT-related decreases in depression and anxiety symptoms (Aim 2). Exploratory analyses will examine whether demographics (e.g., age, sex, race/ethnicity), individual differences (e.g., perceived stress, social support), clinical characteristics (e.g., stage/severity of diagnosis), and treatment adherence (e.g., sessions attended, hours of weekly practice) help determine for whom MBCT is most effective (Aim 3).

Reducing Suicidal Ideation Through Insomnia Treatment

InsomniaDepression1 more

Epidemiologic reports have linked insomnia to suicidal ideation and suicide death. However, no studies have determined whether treating insomnia decreases the risk of suicidality. We have new data indicating that (1) the link between insomnia and suicidal ideation holds true in clinical trials of depressed insomniacs, (2) dysfunctional cognitions about sleep are related to suicidal ideas, and (3) treatment of insomnia with hypnotics leads to a reduction of suicidal ideation. We now propose to test whether cautious use of hypnotics in suicidal, depressed insomniacs may reduce suicide risk in a multi-site clinical trial.
