Effectiveness of a School-Based Hand Sanitizer Program on Reducing Asthma Exacerbations

Asthma is a common, serious illness among children in the United States. Improving hand cleanliness and hygiene may prevent the spread of viruses that can cause asthma exacerbations. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of a school-based hand sanitizer program at reducing the frequency of exacerbations in children with asthma.

Effect of Dietary Supplements With Fish Oil on Mannitol-induced Airway Sensitivity & Inflammation...

We wish to investigate the effects of 3 weeks of orally administered fish oil supplements on the airway sensitivity (provoking dose to cause a 15% fall in FEV1, PD15) to inhaled mannitol (AridolTM). Mannitol, an osmotic stimulus has been demonstrated as a useful model for exercise-induced asthma. We also wish to investigate if there is any associated improvement associated with selected markers of airway inflammation that can be measured in the sputum, blood, urine and exhaled breath condensate. Oral fish oil supplements have recently been demonstrated to be effective inhibitors of exercise-induced asthma, in association with an inhibition of markers of inflammation, over a 3 week treatment period. This finding has important implications in the treatment of asthma as this is a faster and more effective improvement than what is seen with inhaled corticosteroids on exercise-induced asthma. This observation requires validation and further investigation. We wish to study this in two patient groups; (a) steroid naïve asthmatics taking beta2 agonist when required and (b) asthmatics taking regular inhaled corticosteroids < 1000 mcg/day.

This is a single center, double-blind, randomised parallel group design study to investigate the effects of AER 001 on the late phase asthmatic resonse in asthmatic subjects. AER 001 is to be administered subcutaneously (25 mg, once daily) for 28 days. The asthmatic subjects will be challenged with allergen both before and after AER 001 treatment (at screen and at Day 28). The primary outcome will be late phase sthmatic response (the max drop in FEV1 from 4-10 hours after an allergen challenge).

Typically, people with asthma are initially prescribed a low dose of inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) medication to control asthma symptoms. If a low dose of ICS is ineffective at controlling symptoms, the addition of a second controller medication is recommended. This study will examine the effectiveness of the medication tiotropium bromide combined with a low dose of ICS at maintaining asthma control in people with moderately severe asthma.

Available evidences show a role of oral montelukast in acute asthma. Safety of oral montelukast is well established in children, as evidenced by use of oral montelukast in long term management of asthma. Therefore, the investigators planned this study to see the effect of oral montelukast as add on therapy to standard treatment in acute moderate to severe asthma in children between 5-15 years of age. HYPOTHESIS: Addition of single dose of oral montelukast to standard therapy in acute moderate to severe asthma in children aged 5-15 years will reduce the modified pulmonary index score to less than 9 in 90% children compared to 70% in children receiving a placebo.
