This study is designed to determine if the investigational drug is effective and safe in individuals with asthma.

The aim of the present study is to investigate whether the effects of salmeterol in combination with fluticasone propionate on blood markers of airway inflammation are maintained after chronic dosing and whether the effect is influenced by the time of allergen challenge relative to the time of dosing.

In adult patients with mild persistent asthma, singulair® 10 mg will be at least as effective as low dose Inhaled Corticosteroids (ICS) in improving asthma symptom control or satisfaction over a 6 week comparison period.

There is a high prevalence of asthma in southwest Virginia and there are multiple osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT) which are thought to improve lung function. However, there are inadequate studies regarding the effectiveness of using osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) as an office treatment or a home treatment to address obstructive lung disease. In addition, there is little information on the level of acceptance, use, and cost effectiveness of using OMT in rural southwest Virginia. The purpose of this study is to determine the viability of OMT treatment with asthma, the level of acceptance in selected clinics in southwest Virginia, and the effectiveness of home OMT education in order to implement a program to improve asthma control. The study hypotheses are: 1. Osteopathic manipulation delivered to the asthmatic patient will significantly improve spirometry values, thoracic excursion, and subjective asthma symptoms. (.05 alpha) 2.Patients who are taught and use a home treatment regime for asthma will significantly improve spirometry values, thoracic excursion, and subjective asthma symptoms after two weeks, compare with those who do not have home treatment. 3.Physicians educated on the use of OMT for asthma will increase their perceived future use of OMT as an adjunct to treat this disorder.

Comparison of two asthma treatments by lung function measures.

The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of the azalide macrolide azithromycin in adults with persistent asthma. Research Question: Will a 12-week treatment with the antibiotic, azithromycin, result in a statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in overall asthma symptoms and other patient-oriented asthma outcomes one year after initiation of treatment of adult primary care patients with asthma? Experimental Design: The investigators propose a one-year randomized, placebo-controlled, blinded (investigator, patient, data collector, data analyst) trial of 12 weekly doses of azithromycin/placebo as adjunctive therapy (in addition to usual care) along with a parallel observational cohort who will participate 'open label' in 100 adult asthma patients recruited from practice-based research networks (e.g., Wisconsin Research and Education Network (WREN) and others). This "practical clinical trial" will (1) enroll a representative sample of asthma patients encountered in the practices of primary care physicians, (2) employ standard clinical trial methodology to ensure internally valid results and (3) measure outcomes important to patients, so that the results will be valid and applicable to the kinds of asthma patients encountered by family physicians and other primary care providers. To evaluate current and novel therapies and management strategies for children with asthma. The emphasis is on clinical trials that help identify optimal therapy for children with different asthma phenotypes, genotypes, and ethnic backgrounds and children at different developmental stages.

The purpose of the study is to compare the efficacy of a flexible dose of Symbicort with conventional stepwise treatment according to asthma treatment guidelines in patients with persistent asthma.

This study will last up to 6 weeks. Subjects will visit the clinic up to 5 times. Certain clinic visits will include a physical examination, medical history review, and lung function tests. All study related medications and medical examinations will be provided at no cost to the subject. The drugs used in this study are approved for the age group under study.
